"Sometimes destiny doesn't announce its arrival with thunder. Sometimes, it begins with the innocent laughter of a child who unknowingly carries the threads of two broken hearts."
The soft rays of the morning sun slipped through the faded blue curtains of a tiny apartment in a bustling Mumbai chawl, painting golden patterns across the room.
The city outside had already awakened.
The rhythmic clatter of utensils echoed from neighboring homes.
A vegetable vendor shouted from the street below.
Children laughed as they chased each other through the narrow lanes.
The aroma of freshly brewed tea mixed with the scent of incense sticks drifted through the open windows.
Yet inside Apartment 203...
Silence.
A little boy lay curled beneath a dinosaur blanket, hugging a worn-out teddy bear almost as big as himself.
His messy curls covered his forehead while tiny snores escaped his lips.
Five-year-old Ivan Singhania.
A mischievous dreamer.
A storyteller.
A dragon enthusiast.
And the entire world of one woman.
Slowly, he stirred.
Tiny fingers rubbed his sleepy eyes before he instinctively rolled toward the other side of the bed.
"Mumma..."
His little hand searched for the familiar warmth beside him.
But...
It touched only the cold bedsheet.
Ivan frowned.
His sleepy eyes fluttered open.
"Mumma?"
No answer.
He sat up immediately.
The room looked unusually quiet.
Usually, every morning began with his mother's gentle voice waking him with kisses on his forehead.
Today...
Nothing.
A tiny crease formed between his brows.
He climbed off the bed, his dinosaur pajamas almost making him trip over his own feet.
"Mumma?"
Still no answer.
His little heart began racing.
He padded barefoot through the apartment.
First...
The kitchen.
Empty.
He peeked behind the refrigerator.
Nothing.
Then the tiny balcony.
Only clothes swaying gently in the morning breeze.
"Mumma...?"
His voice had become softer now.
He looked under the dining table.
Behind the sofa.
Even inside the bathroom.
Nobody.
His lower lip trembled.
"What if Mumma left?"
The innocent thought frightened him more than it should have.
She had never left without telling him.
Never.
His tiny eyes started glistening with tears.
Just then...
The faint sound of temple bells echoed from outside.
Ivan blinked.
His gaze shifted toward the small wooden mandir in the corner of their living room.
The diya was still burning.
Fresh marigold flowers decorated the idol of Lord Shiva.
His eyes widened.
"Mumma mandir gayi hai!"
(Mumma has gone to the temple!)
The realization instantly erased his fear.
Instead...
He pouted.
"Without me?"
He crossed his tiny arms dramatically.
"Not fair."
Just then, the sound of glass bangles jingling outside reached his ears.
His eyes sparkled.
"Mumma!"
He ran toward the door as fast as his tiny legs could carry him.
At the same moment, Tara Singhania gently pushed open the apartment door, balancing a pooja thali in one hand and a small cloth bag filled with fresh flowers in the other.
Before she could even step inside
Thud!
A tiny hurricane collided with her.
"Mummaaa!"
The pooja thali tilted dangerously.
The diya flickered.
A few flower petals scattered across the floor.
"Arre... sambhal ke, beta!"
(Careful, sweetheart!)
She quickly steadied the plate before laughing softly.
Ivan wrapped his little arms tightly around her waist, refusing to let go.
Tara looked down in surprise.
"What happened to my brave boy?"
Instead of answering, Ivan buried his face against her shoulder.
His tiny voice came out muffled.
"Mujhe laga aap mujhe chhod kar chali gayi..."
(I thought you left me behind...)
For a brief second...
Time seemed to stop.
Tara's smile faded.
Her heart clenched painfully.
She knelt down and cupped his face.
"Look at me."
Ivan slowly looked up.
His eyes were still watery.
Tara kissed his forehead lovingly.
"Main apne prince ko chood kar kahin nahi ja sakti."
(I can never leave my prince behind.)
"Promise"
"Promise"
She smiled through the sudden ache in her heart.
Only then did Ivan smile.
A bright...
Pure...
Heart-melting smile.
The kind that made every hardship in Tara's life worthwhile.
She gently pinched his nose.
"But someone forgot to brush his teeth."
Ivan gasped dramatically.
"I was busy looking for my missing mother."
"Oh really?"
"Detective Ivan was on a secret mission."
She laughed.
"And did Detective Ivan solve the mystery?"
He proudly placed both hands on his waist.
"Yes."
"You were caught stealing blessings from Mahadev."
Tara chuckled.
"I was praying."
"For me?"
"For us."
Ivan tilted his head.
"What did you ask Mahadev?"
She smiled softly.
"I asked Him to always keep my little prince happy."
Ivan thought for a moment before puffing out his tiny chest.
"I also want to pray."
"Right now?"
He nodded seriously.
Tara handed him a flower.
Ivan stood before the small temple, closed his eyes tightly, and folded his tiny hands.
"Mahadev..."
He whispered innocently.
"Please don't let Mumma cry."
"And... please make vegetables disappear forever."
Tara blinked.
"What?"
Ivan opened one eye.
"They're scary."
She burst into laughter.
"So that's your prayer?"
"And..."
He continued confidently.
"Please make Mumma smile every day."
This time...
Tara couldn't laugh.
She simply stared at him.
Sometimes she wondered...
How could someone so small carry such a big heart?
She hugged him tightly.
"So much love in such a tiny body."
Ivan giggled.
"My heart is strong."
"Very strong."
"It protects Mumma."
A tear escaped Tara's eye before she quickly wiped it away.
"No crying."
Ivan immediately cupped her cheeks with his tiny palms.
"You promised."
She nodded.
"I know."
"But these are happy tears."
He frowned.
"Happy tears are confusing."
"They are."
"But someday you'll understand."
He smiled.
"I'll understand everything."
Tara silently prayed he wouldn't.
Not the loneliness.
Not the sacrifices.
Not the pain hidden behind every smile she wore.
As long as she lived...
She wanted Ivan's world to remain filled with sunshine.
Even if she had to stand alone against every storm.
Tara gently ruffled Ivan's messy curls before standing up.
"Now," she said, placing her hands on her hips, "Detective Ivan, your next mission is to brush your teeth."
Ivan saluted dramatically.
"Yes, Captain Mumma!"
He took two quick steps toward the bathroom before suddenly turning around.
"Mumma..."
"Hmm?"
"You really didn't leave me?"
Tara's smile softened.
"I told you..."
She bent down and kissed his forehead again.
"I'll always come back to you."
Satisfied, Ivan flashed a toothy grin and ran toward the bathroom.
Within seconds...
"Mumma!"
"What happened now?"
"My toothbrush disappeared!"
Tara closed her eyes.
"It is exactly where you kept it yesterday."
A few seconds of silence followed.
Then...
"Oh..."
"I found it."
A smile escaped Tara's lips.
Every morning with Ivan was a beautiful mixture of love...
And chaos.
Nearly twenty minutes later...
The aroma of freshly prepared aloo parathas filled the tiny apartment.
The little kitchen was barely big enough for two people to stand together, yet somehow it always felt warm.
Comforting.
Home.
Tara rolled another paratha while keeping an eye on the milk boiling on the stove.
Behind her...
A tiny chair scraped against the floor.
"Mumma..."
She didn't even turn around.
"No."
Ivan blinked.
"I didn't even ask anything."
"You were about to."
He sighed dramatically.
"I just wanted to help."
This time Tara looked back.
A mischievous smile had already appeared on his face.
"Oh?"
"And how exactly were you planning to help?"
"I'll make breakfast."
She raised an eyebrow.
"Really?"
"Yes."
"I am five now."
"I am practically an adult."
Tara laughed.
"Who told you that?"
"Ritvi Maasi."
"She said big boys help their mothers."
Tara smiled warmly.
"She also said big boys listen to their mothers."
Ivan's shoulders dropped.
"I don't like that part."
"I know."
He dragged a small stool toward the kitchen counter.
"At least let me do something."
Looking at his hopeful eyes, Tara couldn't refuse.
"Fine."
His face lit up instantly.
"What should I do?"
She pointed toward the dining table.
"Take the plates there."
"I can do that!"
Very carefully, Ivan picked up two steel plates.
His tiny tongue peeked out in concentration.
One careful step.
Then another.
Just as he proudly reached the table—
Clang!
One spoon slipped from his hand and landed on the floor.
Ivan froze.
He slowly looked toward Tara.
She crossed her arms, trying very hard not to laugh.
"I'm innocent."
He declared immediately.
"The spoon jumped."
"The spoon jumped?"
"Yes."
"It wanted freedom."
Tara burst into laughter.
"Of course."
"It was clearly the spoon's fault."
Ivan nodded confidently.
"I told you."
He picked up the spoon, washed it carefully like Tara had taught him and placed it back on the table.
"There."
"Mission successful."
"My little helper."
She smiled proudly.
Those were the moments Tara silently stored in her heart.
Moments that made every sacrifice worth living through.
Breakfast began with the usual chatter.
Ivan stuffed a large bite of paratha into his mouth.
"Mmm..."
"Mumma..."
"You make the best parathas."
"I know."
He blinked.
"That's not how you're supposed to answer."
"Then?"
"You should say thank you."
She chuckled.
"Fine."
"Thank you."
He smiled proudly.
"You're welcome."
After another bite he suddenly asked,
"Mumma..."
"Hmm?"
"When I grow up..."
"I'll buy you a very big house."
"Oh really?"
"Yes."
"A huge one."
"With twenty rooms."
"And a garden."
Tara smiled.
"What will we do with twenty rooms?"
Ivan thought seriously.
"One room for us."
"One room for my dragons."
"And the rest?"
He shrugged.
"We'll decide later."
She laughed softly.
"And where will this house be?"
He looked outside the window.
"Somewhere quiet."
"There'll be flowers."
"And swings."
"So you can sit and read books."
"I'll make tea for you every evening."
For a brief moment...
Tara forgot to breathe.
She smiled.
"You've planned everything?"
"Of course."
"I'm your son."
Her eyes filled again.
Not because of sadness.
But because she knew...
Children made promises without understanding how expensive life could become.
Yet listening to Ivan made impossible dreams feel real.
After breakfast, Tara began washing the utensils while Ivan packed his school bag.
"Mumma..."
"Homework completed."
"Water bottle filled."
"Pencil box checked."
"Excellent."
He zipped his bag proudly.
"I am responsible."
Ivan adjusted his tiny backpack proudly.
"Let's see if your shoes agree mr responsible."
She looked down.
As expected...
His shoes were on the wrong feet.
"Ivan..."
He looked down and scratched the back of his head sheepishly.
"I knew something felt strange."
A few minutes later, after fixing his shoes and combing his unruly curls for what felt like the tenth time, Tara held his tiny hand as they stepped out of their apartment.
She locked the door behind her.
The narrow corridors of the chawl buzzed with life.
Women chatted while hanging freshly washed clothes.
Children chased each other through the passageways.
An elderly couple sat outside their home sipping tea.
Everyone knew everyone.
Everyone knew Tara.
Some greeted her warmly.
Some admired her strength.
Some whispered behind her back.
Tara had stopped caring long ago.
Her world had become wonderfully small.
It began with Ivan...
And ended with him.
As the mother and son disappeared into the bustling streets of Mumbai
A sleek black Rolls-Royce Phantom glided silently through the private gates of the towering Malhotra Mansion.
Spread across several acres, the estate looked more like a royal palace than a home.
Perfectly trimmed gardens surrounded elegant marble pathways.
A grand fountain sparkled beneath the morning sun.
Luxury cars stood neatly parked in the expansive driveway.
Everything was flawless.
Everything was expensive.
Yet...
The mansion lacked something no amount of wealth could ever buy.
Warmth.
Inside one of the lavish bedrooms, floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked the city skyline.
A man stood motionless before the glass.
Tall.
Broad-shouldered.
Dressed in a crisp white shirt with the sleeves rolled neatly to his forearms.
His expensive wristwatch reflected the morning sunlight.
Sharp features.
Piercing hazel eyes.
An expression that rarely betrayed emotion.
Rudra Malhotra.
At twenty-nine, he had built one of India's fastest-growing business empires.
The business world admired him.
His competitors feared him.
The media called him...
"The Unstoppable Lion of Corporate India."
But titles never interested him.
Neither did fame.
Nor wealth.
Because every achievement felt strangely hollow.
His gaze remained fixed on the city below.
Millions of people.
Millions of stories.
Yet somehow...
He felt utterly alone.
A soft knock interrupted his thoughts.
"Come in."
The door opened.
His personal assistant stepped inside carrying a neatly arranged tablet.
"Good morning, sir."
Rudra gave a brief nod.
"Your board meeting begins at nine."
"The Singapore investors have already arrived."
"The London conference call has been shifted to eleven."
"You also have an interview request from three business magazines."
"Cancel it."
"Sir..."
"I said cancel it."
"Yes, sir."
The assistant hesitated before speaking again.
"Your grandmother also requested that you join everyone for breakfast."
For the first time that morning...
A faint smile appeared on Rudra's face.
"Dadi asked?"
"Yes, sir."
"I'll be there."
The assistant smiled politely before leaving.
As silence returned, Rudra picked up the silver frame resting on his bedside table.
An old college photograph.
Time had slightly faded its colours.
But not the memories attached to it.
His thumb gently brushed across the edge of the frame.
For a fleeting moment...
The cold businessman disappeared.
Leaving behind only a man who had once loved with all his heart.
A distant memory echoed through his mind.
A girl's laughter.
A promise.
A goodbye he had never truly accepted.
Rudra quietly placed the frame back where it belonged.
He adjusted the cuff of his shirt.
The softness vanished from his eyes.
The ruthless businessman returned.
It was time to face another day.
Another meeting.
Another deal.
Another victory that would earn him applause from the world...
But never the peace he had lost years ago.
